ReCAPTCHA

Google also offers a service called ReCAPTCHA to minimize spam and accounts being created on this website for the purposes of promoting spam. Previous methods included clicking a link to confirm email authenticity and only then validating an account. Also, typing in the distorted letters from a graphic image that were difficult for a ‘bot’ to automate. As spammers have gotten more sophisticated, so have the methods of protection. The latest is the checkbox on the registration form that says, “I am not a robot” that must be clicked to complete the form. This sends the user’s IP address and uses other methods of determining if the user is authentic or not. If not, they may be required to undergo additional steps of confirmation.  For more information, you may read Google’s privacy and terms of use pages (these links also appear on the ReCAPTCHA widget shown on the registration page).
